  Devastation: mission pack by Dr_Eyeball test release Mission release

Dr_Eyeball has released teasing infos and WIP screenshots about his upcoming Devastation: mission pack on the BI Forums.

Introduction:
I'm constantly reading about how players want more complex Team vs Team missions and are even asking for the Project Reality mod concept and there are not enough people doing full featured TvT missions which are suitable for public servers, so this game mode (AAS and sub-components combined) has been designed and created to incorporate the fundamental concepts of Project Reality along with many improvements and extra features to create a unique game mode experience for Arma 2.

Game mode description:
The Devastation/AAS v2 is a competitive team versus team MP game mode suitable for public servers. It uses the basis of Sector Control with the added extensions of grouped zones, linked sectors and sequenced capture order to provide a battlefront concept which still works well for fewer players (20-50). It does not work well for too few players (eg: 6v6).

AAS Core Engine:
The Devastation game mode is built on top of the AAS v2 Engine, which was developed by ArMoGaDoN (aka: [WWS]WarWolf). The AAS2 Engine essentially controls the objectives for the mission. Devastation only uses less than half of the engine's full capabilities, which we'll hopefully rectify in future. Other 3rd party scripts are listed in the readme file. The Arma 2 version was ported over from ArmA.

Edit July 4th 2009 Devastation beta v0.1 released :
This is a alpha/beta test/preview version release only. (Probably should have delayed this another week, but anyway.)
It is not suitable for general public server use. Only for testers and dev's.
Primary purpose is to start identifying any obvious MP issues when there are 2 or more players. Monitor the RPT log.
Looks like there is still at least a week's worth of tweaking required to get the base running smooth.

Sound:
If anyone knows how to get the sound files to play using 'say' command (as they worked in Arma 1), could you let us know. I had no luck. No sound came through. See ICE\spot\SpotMarker.sqf line 43 for example.

Minimum players:
None of the Devastation missions will be suitable for small scale MP play (eg: 5vs5 is unsuitable).
The absolute minimum players required for this game mode to work effectively is about 20 players (10v10) with a recommended average of about 32-40.

  Mapfact Reduced Voices Addon v1.01 Addon release
BadAss from Mapfact.net informed the community with the news that they have released their Reduced Voices Addon v1.01 by Lester on the BI Forums.

This Addon reduces the acustic communication ingame significantly so that not every lapidary report worries the player.
A spoken "unknown unknown position one-three-one-four-eight-two" will be gone but the text messages remain so you don't miss any information!

It didn't touch the atmospheric accustic comments. Some rather rare and special units and vehicles are still there, too, but you have to read the message to learn about the context, though.

The specials are:
* Launcher Soldier
* Sniper
* Officer
* MobileHQ
* Static Mortar
* Static Canon
* UAV

Because there are three spoken languages in ArmA 2 this addon comes in three PBOs of which every single one reduces the respective spoken communication. Using all 3 PBOs results in a total reduction of all three language's voices output.

  Island Panthera for ArmA by IceBreakr Addon release

IceBreakr has released his long awaited Panthera island on the BI Forums.

WHAT IS PANTHERA?
Name Panthera itself comes from Slovenian history of "black panther" crest and the map itself is based on the real height data of Slovenia's Northwest part in Europe - named Gorenjska Region.
....

INTERESTING FACTS

* Gorenjska region is in fact NW part of Slovenia in Europe and of course in RL it isn't an island.

* due to heavy real-life vegetation and gameplay issues author' had to resize a sector of ~40x40 klicks (kilometers) down to 10km x 10km terrain, quite enough for a small infantry operation supported by light armor and choppers. Of course jets and heavy armor can be used too but it requires a lot of skill and tactics in such harsh terrain. Large mountains and deadly valleys can be tough even for the most experienced fighters. Roads are basically only way to travel around, but dense vegetation and many chokepoints can be fatal for a single vehicle or even an armoured convoy. Therefor recommended way of travel is tabbing aka on foot.

* first plan has been to create an entire Slovenia (of course resized to ArmA), but too many details were lost on mountain ranges. Slovenia is very similiar to other European countries with vast forests and rich vegetation.

* real-life counterpart towns in the area had to be resized to small villages, couple of them listed here: Radovljica, Bled, Jesenice, Mojstrana, Kranjska Gora, Kobarid, Tolmin, Bohinjska Bela, etc. Map now features over than 60 settlements/places, of course much smaller than real life counterpart.

* texture is based on 10240x10240 composite of various satellite images and photoshopped in couple of places.

* there are four airports present:
- Lesce (real one is cessna/soaring plane capable, but in-game runway is the sake of gameplay paved and much bigger, so fighters & transport planes can use it)
- Bovec (real one, small for mainly helicopter operations or for very very daring pilots)
- Arnoldstein (fake one, Arnoldstein doesn't have one in RL, but this one has been added for better gameplay and mission makers' ideas coming to life.
- Smugglers (another fake one, this one stands in the desert and locals use it for smuggling operations in and out of the island)

* Almost everything exists in the real World. Desert part on the SE is created from the scratch and therefor fake - Slovenia doesn't have deserts. Reason: better gameplay.

* roads are based on real-life data and cover all sectors of the map.

* first try to explore the island by positioning your squad on Lesce Airport (center East part) and launch vehicle and air patrols from there.

  Bradley example (A2 config included) by modEmMaik Addon release
modEmMaik has released his Bradley example (A2 config included), MLOD's/Rvmats and configs unbin included on our Forums.

I have added an A2 config to the OPF / ArmA open source Bradley.

zGuba provided the latest fixes (new GeoLOD and fixed gunner/commander turned out optics), I tried to include the new sound options.

Issues:
* Damage section textures are not working
* Interior is disabled due to "greyed out" periscopes in the interior (A2 seems to support windows only. A transparent texture that has faces behind it, is displayed plain grey.)

Feel free to release a modified version, as long as this version can be installed parallel without interfere (I do not care about credits, but I think that the rest of the supporting team might do so). Or simply play with the features (rvmat's, weapon etc.).

  PAADecompressor released by T_D Addon release
T_D released on the BI Forums a PAADecompressor tool, handy for decompressing A2 textures back to A1 format. This way you can easily use TexView2 for the textures.

I made a little tool that makes A2 textures compatible with texView2. This way you dont need Photoshop and Kegetys PAA Plugin.
Here the Readme:

This little tool is for people that can't or dont want to use PAA Plugin for Photoshop by Kegetys
to view and edit A2 textures.
Syntax:

PAADecompressor.exe [source [destination]]

If no parameters are given a dialog appears where you can choose the file that should be decompressed.
Decompressed files are ending with "_decompressed.paa" if destination name wasn't specified.

Shell extension:

This package contains a PAAD.reg (thx to kju) file that register the tool, so that you can quickly decompress paa
files by rightclicking on them. You just have to edit the path in it.

DISCLAIMER:

I take no responsibility for (im)possible damage to your game/system that may be caused
by installation of this tool.
